Lake Sevan is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, and Dilijan beyond the pass is called “Armenian Switzerland” for its dense forests and mountain air. Together they make a perfect day trip.
The route
From Yerevan to Sevan it is about 65 km on the M4 highway, roughly an hour. From Sevan to Dilijan it is another 35 km or so: the road crosses a pass and a tunnel, after which the landscape suddenly turns from mountain steppe to forest.
What to see
- Sevanavank — a 9th-century monastery on a peninsula. The hill gives the best view of the lake.
- Sevan’s shore and beaches — in summer people swim here and eat the famous Sevan fish.
- Old Dilijan — the restored Sharambeyan street with craft workshops and cafés.
- Haghartsin Monastery — a medieval complex in the forest not far from Dilijan.
Tips
- Sevan is cooler than Yerevan — bring a sweater even in summer.
- In winter there may be snow on the pass — an all-wheel-drive SUV is more convenient in the cold season.
- If you don’t want to rush, stay the night in Dilijan and drive back the next day.
At MobiRent the daily price goes down from 2 days, so a two-day trip is better value. No deposit needed.
